What to do How to do it
Obtain three floppy disks. You can purchase them from a local shop for about 1500/=.
Format a floppy disk and label it with your surname.
  1. Insert a blank disk in the drive.
  2. Open Windows Explorer. (optional but recommended for file management)
  3. Double-click My Computer.
  4. Right-click 3 1/2 Floppy (A:) and click Format.
  5. Type your surname in the Label box.
  6. Click Start. (Warning: any files on the disk will be erased!)
Create a folder with your name.
  1. Click 3 1/2 Floppy (A:) to select it.
  2. Click File, move to New, and click Folder.
  3. Type your full name, surname first, e.g. "Vogl, Greg", and press Enter.

Create folders inside your folder with these names:

  • File Management
  • Internet
  • Word Processing
  • Spreadsheets
  1. Double-click your folder to open it.
  2. Click File, New, Folder.
  3. Type "File Management" and press Enter.
  4. Repeat for the other three folders.
In the File Management folder, create a text file named example.txt containing the line
"This is a text file created by <your name>".
  1. Open Notepad.
  2. Type "This is a text file created by <your name>".
  3. Click File, Save As.
  4. Type "example.txt" and press Enter.
In the File Management folder, create a Word file named example.doc containing the line
"This is a Word file created by <your name>".
  1. Open Microsoft Word.
  2. Type "This is a Word file created by <your name>".
  3. Double-click Word and click the I button to italicise Word.
  4. Click File, Save As.
  5. Select the Save In menu. Click A:. Double-click your name. Double-click File Management.
  6. Type "example.doc" and press Enter.
In the File Management folder, create a copy of example.txt named copy.txt.
  1. Click example.txt.
  2. Click Edit, Copy or press Ctrl-C.
  3. Click Edit, Paste or press Ctrl-V.
  4. Click File, Rename or Press F2.
  5. Type copy.txt and press Enter.
Create a backup copy of the floppy disk.
  1. Make sure the floppy disk is in the drive and Windows Explorer is running.
  2. Click "3 1/2 Floppy (A:)".
  3. Click File, Copy Disk.
  4. Click the Start button.
  5. Insert the second disk when asked. Any files on the second disk will be erased!

Copy the course files to a floppy disk.
Test that the files were copied to the disk.

  1. Insert a floppy disk.
  2. Use Windows Explorer or Network Neighborhood to locate the MIS I folder.
  3. Right-click on the folder and select properties to see how much space it takes.
  4. Right-click on the floppy disk and see how much free space it has.
  5. Right-click on the folder, move to "Send To" and click "3 1/2 Floppy (A:)".
  6. Double-click A:, double-click MIS I folder, and double-click index.htm.
Label each floppy disk.
Give your instructor one copy of the disk containing your exercise files.
  1. Attach a label to the floppy disk.
  2. Write the following information on the label of each exercise disk.
    • Your full name
    • Assignments Disk
    • UMU, BAM, MIS I
    • Semester 2, 2002-2003
