Word Processing IV Exercise

In this exercise, you will create a simple graphical poster on the computer-related topic of your choice. 

The goal is to become familiar with as many graphical elements of Microsoft Word as possible. Be creative!

What to do How to do it
Open Microsoft Word to a new document.
  1. Click Start, move to Programs, click Microsoft Word.
Type your topic, your name and today's date on the first three lines.
  1. Type your topic and press Enter
  2. Type your name and press Enter.
  3. Click Insert, Date and Time, select a format, and click OK.
Save the file in your folder.
  1. Insert your floppy disk.
  2. Click File, Save As.
  3. Select "3 1/2 Floppy (A:)" from the Save In menu.
  4. Double-click your folder.
  5. Double-click the Word Processing folder.
  6. Type word4 for the file name.
  7. Click Save.
Change the title of the document to use Word Art.
  1. Select the first line. Press Ctrl-X to cut the text.
  2. Click Insert, Picture, Word Art.
  3. Select a word shape.
  4. Press Ctrl-V to paste your text. 
  5. Change font and size if desired. Click OK.
  6. Move, resize and change other formatting if desired.
Insert a comment with the text "Management Information Systems: Word Processing IV Exercise".
  1. Click Insert, Comment.
  2. Type "Management Information Systems: Word Processing IV Exercise". Click Close.
  3. Click View, Comments. Click Close.
Insert at least one symbol that relates to your topic. Use a large font (at least 36 point).
  1. Click Insert, Symbol.
  2. Select a font from the Font menu.
  3. Click on a symbol of your choice. Click Insert. Click Close.
  4. Select the symbol (by dragging with the mouse or Shift + arrow key).
  5. Select a large number from the Font Size menu or type a number in the Font Size box.
Use the drawing toolbar to draw at least one simple picture to represent your topic.
  1. If you do not see the drawing toolbar, click View, Toolbars, Drawing.
  2. Use tools such as AutoShapes, line, arrow, rectangle and oval.
  3. Change the fill colour and line colour, line, dash and arrow style.
Insert a text box with a brief definition of your topic.
  1. Click Insert, Text Box.
  2. Click and drag to make a text box of the desired size and location.
  3. Type the definition of your topic.
  4. Select the text and make it the font, size and colour of your choice.
Insert at least one clip art picture to represent your topic. It should have a caption which describes the picture.
  1. Click Insert, Picture, Clip Art.
  2. Choose a category or use keyword search.
  3. Click the picture and click the first button on the menu to insert it.
  4. Select the picture by clicking on it once.
  5. Resize it by dragging the resize handles.
  6. Move it by dragging in the middle.
  7. Click Insert, Caption, OK.
  8. Type a description of the picture.
Insert a border for the whole page. It can be just a line or border art.
  1. Click Format, Borders and Shading, Page Border.
  2. Select one of the settings (Box, Shadow, 3D).
  3. Select a style, colour, width and maybe Art, and click OK.
Arrange all the elements to be attractively laid out on the page. Move, resize, copy and paste, format, change margins, etc. as appropriate.

Save your changes to the document and exit.
  1. Press Ctrl-S to save the document.
  2. Click File, Exit to close Word.
