Lab 1: Internet Communication Tools

Overview

• Choose one of the following four topics; starting points and hints are listed.
• Choose to work on something that you don't already know, e.g. an account you don't yet have.
• Investigate using the Internet and the Web.
• Create an account or subscribe if possible.
• Report your findings in your own words.
• Your investigation should answer the following questions:
  • How do you get to the site?
  • What do you need to do in order to subscribe, sign up or install?
  • What content, features, and benefits are available?
  • How do you unsubscribe, cancel or uninstall?
• Send the results in an e-mail message to the instructor with subject web lab 1.

Electronic Mail

• Obtain a NeoMail account.
• Create an account using a free e-mail service such as Yahoo, or Hotmail.

Mailing Lists

• Select a list from Liszt.com.

Newsgroups

• Select a newsgroup from groups.google.com.

Chat and Instant Messaging

• Investigate NetMeeting on a PC running Microsoft Windows (click Start, click Run, type conf and press Enter).
• Investigate MSN Messenger on a PC where it is installed.
• Investigate Yahoo Messenger on a PC where it is installed.
